Sailing
the Delphiad, book IV
(NAUSIKAA, HOMER, and AUTOS on the beach, early morning;
the sky is cloudy in shades of pink and violet-grey.)
NAUSIKAA: the nights are getting darker,
and weve been working like a dog,
and like a horse, and like
a woman;
HOMER: but he
would conceal her
(for)by(to)the shining-
radiant shield.
NAUSIKAA: but somehow at times,
the memories come through,
AUTOS: crossing over(through)it, o Works(hundreds)from-afar,
and Okalee(O beautiful-lady)(of kale)of many(fire-
works)towers(fortresses),
NAUSIKAA: and thinking of you,
my heart is lighter;
HOMER: hither which(ones)first(among)Trojans
did blameless Teukros(to make-build-work, to overcome, to pass-
through)(take-hold-grasp-seize)(to-kill-or-to-slay)?
ἔνθα τίνα πρῶτον Τρώων ἕλε Τεῦκρος ἀμύμων;
NAUSIKAA: which brings me to the dream;
AUTOS: thence(came and went)then
(there)into Aliartos(sea-side-sunny-salt-bread)
you arrived at(poetry-poet)rich-in-grass;
NAUSIKAA: still here?
(enter APOLLO, ZEUS, and HERA. APOLLO brings a plastic-
woven recliner and puts it on the sand. ZEUS sits and reclines,
wearing sunglasses; as HERA stands by his side; they watch.)
NAUSIKAA: and then some; what sing you, poet?
HOMER: Orsilochos is rousing ambush-raising, bringing-
forth, indeed, the firsts;
NAUSIKAA: well then; lets be the first
to count them in; we say they slay; thats one —
(she calls) come on in, boys!
lets line them up, here;
(ORSILOCHOS the Trojan comes running onto the beach.
As each name is called, a Trojan enters, wearing a handsome
sarung, and no shirt, to stand in a chorus line, on the sand.
They do not appear to be injured from the war.)
HOMER: (adjusts reading-glasses)
and(indeed)Ormenos sets in motion, stirring-up spears of flame,
NAUSIKAA: thats two, obviously hot
HOMER: and Ophelestes, helping the people, making a stand;
NAUSIKAA: we knew an Ophelia once. thats three,
HOMER: and Daitor, who portions a loaf and partakes in a feast;
NAUSIKAA: watch out for him, hes four;
HOMER: and Chromios en-colors his complexion of anointed skin;
NAUSIKAA: wow, five!
HOMER: and(they were dedicating)(they were running against)equal-
to-gods Lukophontes, murderously killing by silver wolflight,
NAUSIKAA: were shivering; hes six!
HOMER: and(indeed)Amopaon, together-companion-if-not-best-friend
NAUSIKAA: everybody gossips about seven,
HOMER: with the son of Poluaemon, of many bloods, an ancient gang,
NAUSIKAA: and bloody eight, fresh off the streets!
HOMER: and(indeed)Melanippos, obsidian Omar on his diamond horse;
NAUSIKAA: yes, thats Omar; all sent down to Hades town,
and now theyre our best friends; lets hear it
for nine Trojans, slaying!
(the TROJAN PIT CREW applauds for themselves;
HERA applauds, elbowing
Zeus, who has fallen asleep.)
AUTOS: but(he)stepped on Telphousa(marshy-
bog at peak-perfection of nature-
growing-life at-a-distance);
NAUSIKAA: and clearly alive;
HOMER: all, one-by-one, (he)caused to touch
(to)by(for)many-nourishing earth(chthonos).
NAUSIKAA: o lady Hera, arent you impressed?
AUTOS: there(for)by(to)you(this-she)(o satiety, loathing,
weariness)is pleased, (the)place(country-space)(the north-
west-wind)un-harmed(un-hurt, gentle, doing-no-harm)
to make-ready(build-work,
a)temple-dwelling and(indeed)sacred-woody(and with-tree-
like-markings)groves;
NAUSIKAA: in other words, lady Hera looks impressed;
HOMER: but seeing him, killing(destroying)(slaying)
from(his)strong bow the Trojan battalions,
the lord of men, (o)Agamemnon
, rejoiced;
NAUSIKAA: but the west-north-wind trades seeing-kings;
AUTOS: but(you)stood very(underhanded-secretly)near,
NAUSIKAA: he was squeezing-hugging-throttling-chhh,
AUTOS: to(her)self and(indeed)you spoke-through
(to)her the(muthos)story-word;
NAUSIKAA: that was the sound of choking.
APOLLO: Telphousa, here(there)(surely-needful-binding)wed be minded
(exercising-understanding-intelligence-feeling-sense-sensibility-thought)
NAUSIKAA: hes good at lists
APOLLO: to make-ready(build-work)(a)roundly-beautiful temple-dwelling
of human beings(and household-useful)-oracle-(chresterion),
NAUSIKAA: didnt you hear me say were choking?
APOLLO: which(for)by(to)me always(there)here(they)will(carry-
lead)bring perfect(full-complete)hekatombs(hundred-
oxen-offerings-from-afar)(to-for-by-tombs),
‘Τελφοῦσ᾽, ἐνθάδε δὴ φρονέω περικαλλέα νηὸν

NAUSIKAA: hes being-minded by hekatombs;
APOLLO: and as many as have(hold)(by holding)the fat(plump)Peloponnesus,
and as many as(hold)(fat-plump, romantically-remembered)Europe,
NAUSIKAA: (are those the only places you know?)
APOLLO: and as many as hold the Americas, earth-being-full of earths, North
and rugged South, and as many as hold Asia, fat(plump)mask-famous;
and Africa, surely(indeed)perhaps, its then-and-there to you someday;
and forgetting neither Antarctica, may she(to)by(for)ice-be-held,
nor Australia, of the-dreaming-fame)and(indeed)throughout the sea-
surrounded(oft-forgotten)isles, where wind and sea mix many names,
NAUSIKAA: whereas it minds-me of the cows;
APOLLO: that so many will consult(inquire)(use it)(seek it)(need-
lack and make-use of it)(experience)(suffer)(study)(treat,
entreat, make deals with it);
NAUSIKAA: hes being-minded of the milk — wait
a minute, how can he answer all these consultations,
if he doesnt even know all the continents?
hey you know what, we were thinking,
this job seems really large; maybe
we should ask the Pope? this seems
like a Pope-level situation; or like
the Dalai Lama? ah —
(ZEUS, snortling, wakes from nap — )
NAUSIKAA: its your first transmission, o lord —
ZEUS: but(o)Poseidon(he will let go —
he will let flow — he will let throw —
or will you free yourself from —
NAUSIKAA: it sounds pretty garbled —
ZEUS: )his gall(bile — bitter anger — wrath)
NAUSIKAA: but not in a good way —
ZEUS: for(indeed)some(he — alone)wouldnt be able( —

or accepted to share the wholes — )
NAUSIKAA: theres a dyad-set-against sharing the wholes
ZEUS: set against(the)will(of)all immortal goddesses —
and gods( — against all immortal seeings —
)to quarrel(contend — compete —
dispute — )alone —
NAUSIKAA: which god is it who chokes the god?
(HERA shows her hands to prove innocence.
ZEUS is snoring again.)
APOLLO: (but)and(to)by(for)which(wholes)we(o possession-
by-wholes)proclaiming-oracles(falling-upon-assailing-
attack)would pronounce(delivery-act)judgments

in(a)fat(plump)temple-dwelling.
NAUSIKAA: if you say so, o lord; were glad
its not our responsibility to deal with
the consequences, in case things
go wrong; unless —
AUTOS: so-speaking, Phoibos(shining-radiant-pure)Apollo
arranged(managed, distributed, set-forth, disposed)
the(wide - spacious)foundations(the root-
bed of the eye)(base of the throat)
broad and very(dyad-secretly)tall
(o-all)unbroken(continuous);
NAUSIKAA: so divine,
he didnt even break a sweat;
and yet, ah —
(ZEUS sits bolt upright; its unclear if hes awake.)
NAUSIKAA: o lord, hither comes-and-goes one more delivery —
ZEUS: but he, at least,
on a raft —
(knocked-up —
OMAR: what
ZEUS: hand-to-hand, off-
hand, temporarily — sketchily —

NAUSIKAA: we see he struggles
to put suffering into words;

ZEUS: )would by the twentieth day approach —
NAUSIKAA: as a beggar and a refugee —
ZEUS: Scheria, who holds-fast her stream —
NAUSIKAA: she-of-large-clods — so fertile! —
ZEUS: in the land of the Phaiakians,
NAUSIKAA: hospitable as we really are —
ZEUS: (and)they become near-gods,
NAUSIKAA: we-looking, each into the others eyes —
ZEUS: (and)they would honor him —
NAUSIKAA: with feasts, and theyll hang wreaths —
ZEUS: around(his)heart —
NAUSIKAA: treating him —
ZEUS: as(a)god;
NAUSIKAA: that improved it; maybe
were not so bad at this;
(ZEUS goes back to sleep.)
AUTOS: but she-seeing-Telphousa seeing(his)(curdled-fig-

NAUSIKAA: which is complicated, his heart,
and difficult to sort-of pick and fiddle
your way out of, but hes almost too
interested in hekatombs —
AUTOS: was angered(wroth) —
NAUSIKAA: and after all, she isnt we —
AUTOS: and spoke
(this muthos)story-word;
TELPHOUSA: o bright-radiant-pure(o)lord(who)works-from-afar,
NAUSIKAA: dripping with sarcasm, we empath;
TELPHOUSA: some(o)word-song(to)by(for)your phrenes(heart-mind-trunk-
built-concealed-from-we)we will put(lay-down, roots-
plant, and set-in-place).
‘φοῖβε ἄναξ ἑκάεργε, ( ἔπος τί τοι ἐν φρεσὶ θήσω ).
NAUSIKAA: uh-oh, it seems the worker-from-
afar becomes the worked, o mistress-lady wife —
HERA: already a good(brave-noble)man has been(we have
been)born, who(to)for(by)Argives will be(o)lord —
(you will be over-lorded —
he polishes-smooth —
be polished, you! —
he will bring back —

by bringing-up — celebrating — raising-
up)(as you prepare to set sail — whee! — )
NAUSIKAA: dont be upset, o shining one; this myth
seems more complete, and the delivery,
she speaks — an(o)else-lord, from(o)else-where —
o lord, are you sure youre the lord you say you are?
(APOLLO stunned,
AUTOS speechless)
TELPHOUSA: hither when(youre following the dyad-
word-song) —
NAUSIKAA: which(indeed)we are —
TELPHOUSA: thither when youre minded(exercising-
thought-understanding-intelligence-feeling-
sense-sensibility)to make-ready(build-
work)(a)roundly-beautiful temple-dwelling;
(TROJAN PIT CREW applauds and cheers)
NAUSIKAA: o lord, we hear youre being kicked-
out; is it for infidelity?
(APOLLO mortified)
NAUSIKAA: there, there, now, now, o lord;
whats a little thither-hither between islands?
are we right boys?
(TROJAN PIT CREW laughs and cheers)
NAUSIKAA: sweet people;
HERA: (its)Eurustheus(broad-ranging power, breadth
of strengh, expansive might)son of Sthenelos(would-bring
strength)child-descendant of Perseus, (of your race-
stock-kin)(offspring)(clan-house-family)(tribe,
caste, breed, generation)(class-sort-kind)
and hes got)your genes —
NAUSIKAA: its confusing when the god has genes;
well have to map it, but her voice sounds pure
and radiant! so its decided; were inviting her
TELPHOUSA: to be(for)by(to)human beings(an)oracle(chresterion),
NAUSIKAA: there, there, Apollo, dont be glum;
its just because(o)Heras not your mum;
HERA: (its)not-too-shabby
for him to be(o)lord(to)for(by)Argives.
NAUSIKAA: everyone loves Argives, right?
lets hear again, how not-too-shabby?
TELPHOUSA: which(o whos)(to)by(for)you always hither
(thither)(they)will carry(lead-bring)perfect(full-
complete)hecatombs(hundred-oxen-offerings-
from-afar)(to-for-by tombs);
NAUSIKAA: see o lord? o wholes, o always
perfect, never incomplete! and we get
the hekatombs too, a whole island
of happy cows well be;
HOMER: so(she)said, but sharp pain struck-
(raised-typhon-smoke)through(his)deep-
phrenes(heart-stirred-smoulderingly-deep);
NAUSIKAA: sounds like she dodged a bullet
OMAR: indeed
(TELPHOUSA enters in human form;
she and NAUSIKAA drink fruity cocktails
then dance with the pit crew and sing)
NAUSIKAA and TELPHOUSA:
o whos o whos, o - two - by - four,
bring perfect, perfect, perfect, perfect
perfect h - e - k - a - t - o - m - b - s - !
NAUSIKAA: cant wait to tell Demodokos about this. all sets!

the Delphiad, book III
(NAUSIKAA and HOMER on the beach, at sunrise.)
NAUSIKAA: you call me cute in a way we cannot fight,
HOMER: had not Achilles himself risen-up(indeed)and said
the(muthos)story-word;
N: so we call surrender;
(Rise, Achilles.)
ACHILLES: now no longer exchange-in-turn, (you-two)
(them-two), o Ajax and o Idomeneos, mean(cowardly)
(cruel)(shameful)(abusive)(harmful)word-
song(evil)uglies,
(neither)when(following the dyad-word-
song), nor has it(been)seemly,
N: ever;
ACHILLES: but(indeed)by the other(they-dyad,
you-dyad)would be resentful(angry-wroth),
at whoever would do this kind of thing.
N: surrounded by cool August breeze,
he still knows anger;
ACHILLES: but still, you(all)seated in the agon(contest-
gathering-struggle-battle), look upon the horses;
N: safe in a warm nest of pillows and sheets,
we look upon the horses;
ACHILLES: but they(by whom)quickly(perhaps)themselves hurrying
(hastening, eagerly-with-speed, blowing-blustering, propelling,
assailing-attacking)around victory, hither(thither)will(go)come;
N: we wait;
(enter, Autos.)
ACHILLES: but then you will recognize each
of the Argives horses, by whom(they are)second
and by whom(being)presently-in-front.
N: our eyes are yours.
AUTOS: but you stood on the(forgotten-hidden-spoils-plundering-
pirates)Lelantine plain; it(this-she)didnt(o satiety, o loathing,
o weariness)delight(delight, you)(in)your thumos(hrrr),
to(make)build a temple-dwelling and sacred-wooded(with tree-
like markings)groves.

H: as he said; but Tudeides(pursuing)went(and came)very(pit-
under-handed-dyad)close-by(seeking-chasing-pressing-
driving-urging-prosecuting)and drawing-near;
N: he lives far from where prosecutors are,
A: but thence(whence)striding across the Euripos, o Apollo throws-
from-afar, you stepped up to the sacred mountains,
greenish-yellow(bilious-looking)(fresh-blooming);
N: and prefers flowers;
H: but by whip-scourge-lash he was always driving(drive,
you)arm-strokes-through from the shoulder;
N: our lord has shoulders, we dont whip;
A: but swiftly(perhaps, you)came from him(self)
to(she)Mukalessos(mooing-bellowing-nose-turning-mousy)
and(indeed)going(coming)to(he)Teumessos(happening-accomplishing-
vessel of a canny-fortune-device-workshop)(which cares)with-
grass-fit-to-make-a-bed.
N: swiftly by chariot, come for a ride,
H: but(the dyad)horses(o horses)by him(by him)
were lifting-lofty(raising-up)swiftly(quickly-nimbly)
passing-through(accomplishing)
(their)course.

N: the loftier-the-lift, the less we try;
A: but you were arriving in the seat of Thebes(treasure-chest-store-
house-container, put-in-place to step-n-go)having-swooped-
down(covered and clothed)by hule(forest-wood-
land, firewood-fuel, brushwood-twigs,
stuff-material-matter, sediment-
mud, ooze, phlegm-
catarrh);
N: digging in the earth of our own heart;
H: but the plume of dust was always hurling(throwing,
flying, striking)the charioteer,
N: so we cant always see just where we are;
A: for not yet(was)anyone(of)mortal-man dwelling in sacred Thebes,
nor then-and-there, yet-then-at-least, were there(k)not-twisting-paths,
nor drive-command-paths, throughout(the)grain-
bearing plain(of)Thebes,
N: so we relied on our horses;
they too enjoy grain.
H: but the chariot having-been(dyad)covered(closely-surrounded,
shielded)by gold and tin, by swift-footed horses was
(as we were approaching)running-close-after;
N: we had to trust we would be safe;

A: but still, the hule(forest-woodland-cut-wood-

mud-slime-phlegm-catarrh)
was having(and)held —
aouuuuuuuu!
N: we were the howling;
H: nor were many tracks coming-through-after from the iron-rim
around the wheel, in the fine(thin-delicate-subtle-small-
impotent-slight-slender)cloud of dust

with clouds of dust);

(it went)dyad-earlier-was going,
o Apollo throws-from-afar,
N: there was a beacon,
guiding us through the night;
H: but(both)seeking-eagerly(urging-pressing-on, hastening,
exerting, anxious, harassed)they were flying.
N: they were just being girls;
A: but to Onchestos(swollen-pompous-bellowing-pear-
tree-place, projecting-hook-pour, set-standing-
straight)you went, to Poseidons sacred grove;
N: we have some warm memories;
A: where(a)newly-tamed(filly)foal recovers(draws breath)
(you-drawing-breath)being-roundly-over-loaded
(vexed-grieved-annoyed)dragging
(the)beautiful chariot;

N: we have some hard ones too;
H: but(he)made a stand(set-placed)(stayed-checked)(established-
instituted-fixed)(weighed-)into the mid(dle-intermediate, imp-
partial, middling, moderate, mediocre, mean)into the agon
(gathering-assembly-contest-struggle-place),

N: o(he)repudiates established-institution;
A: but onto the ground(the)roundly-good driver
from(the)seat-board(o springing)leaps —
goes(comes-to)(the)road;
N: hes made of earth but swift of feet;
H: but much sweat was spouting(and gushing forth)
out of(the)horses necks and(indeed)
from(his)chest onto the ground.
N: our names are rivers;
A: but it(by this)meanwhile indeed
empty(-handed-fruitless-void-)carriage(shelter)rattles

(is)letting-go(leaving-neglecting)(what-belongs-

N: we dance(an)empty-handed-fruitless-void,
H: but seeing(him), swift(to ward-off, defend, assist, avail, hold-
out)footed-god-like Achilles was feeling pity(for him),
N: but we bring and carry some-great-soul;
A: but if the dyad-chariot break(shiver)s in the sacred-wooded(with
tree-like markings)gro(o)ve, (they)attend(caring for)(letting their hair
grow long)to the horses,

N: and we drag-along a pretty-great-friend;
H: but making a stand, then and there, into the Argives, winged-
word-songs(he)was speaking(speak, you)-agora-(into
the assembly, the marketplace);
N: there is a voice, it tells me no,
guiding me through the night;
A: but leaning(sloping-lying-down)(on something)
(they)allow(by letting-go)the(chariot);

yous are keeping and taking and bringing him, like an animal, steering the ship
and leading him on, like fate, you carry him off, as by his cause —
celebrate him, bring him back, keep him in memory, be his cause, you both!
he would be gracious indeed, would lend a gracious ear, Apollo(o Apollo),
Artemis-shows-from-afar, Artemis-dia-xun, Artemis-all-through-together —
but in book 21, Penelope fetches and brings the bow of Odysseus, from its peg,
where it hangs in the shining case that covers it; she promises marriage to the one
who can string the bow and send an arrow — cleanly — through all twelve axes;
Antinoös pretends to be humble, but hes not, and hell be the first to taste the arrow
from the one whom he gives no attention, from the beggars blameless hands; and
Telemachos tries three times to draw the bow; and on his fourth try, he couldve —
but Od gives a sign, so Tel lays low, drawing instead shame on himself, declining
to try again; as Ant leads-on the others to try, in turn; Leodes, son of Oinops,
a diviner, who pronounces the doom of the bow, which will rend many princes
from life and soul; but Ant castigates him, pronouncing his word-song terrible
and shameful; he directs them to heat and wax to bend the bow, and leads-on
the others to try; as the others are trying, and failing, Odysseus conspires
with the oxherd and swineherd; first, he tests and recognizes their infallible
tempers; then he reveals himself, by the scar he took from the boars white tooth;
they weep, and kiss, and embrace, and kiss, their heads and shoulders and hands;
then he makes, with them, his plans; finally, to be given his bow, as the women
lock and bar the suitors in, and themselves, women, outside, that they mustnt
peep, if any of them hears; they must simply sit still
at their work, in silence.
(Odyssey 21.1-239)
but the girls ignore “nobodys” orders not to watch(even if Telemachos
hadnt said not to follow orders, we still wouldnt follow orders);
and the suitors try; and they fail; and Eurymachos speaks the shame of falling so far
short of Ods strength; Ant proposes, saying, “but come, come on,” lets go drink
his wine, and instruct his goatherd to slaughter his goats, and offer them to Apollo —
would a far-working-lord-master be gracious? Od slaughters all of them, even if
they ask for mercy, except for the singer, who was forced, and the herald, who was
loyal. Odysseus asks the old nurse maid to snitch on the women-servants, and she
hands over those who were extra naughty. there happened to be twelve.
Odysseus makes them clean the mess, then orders his son, Telemachos,
to slaughter them:
so there and then he spoke, and(taking)the ships cable(persuasion)of a lapis-

Odysseus has newly-burst-forth from his disguise and slaughtered the suitors,
and the old maid wakes-up Penelope, from a very good sleep, to tell her; and it
must be the happiest of all moments in the whole history of human poetry, after
one of terrifying brutality; but Pen doesnt go to him right away; she holds back
her trust, telling their son that they have signs known only by themselves, to prove
they are(to)(for)(by)each other; and Odysseus pretends to hold a wedding,

but Eurynome cleans all the gore from Odysseus so that hes suffused again
with beauty, as when a craftsman gold-overlays-on-silver; so we again can see
his locks of hair-hung-down like purple hyacinth; so-looking-immortal goes he
to meet Penelope; he calls her strange, she calls him strange; then she tests him,
by telling the maid to bring his bed; and Odysseus proves himself, by saying, you
cant do that, as we made our own bed, so we know it very well; especially by one
particular feature, which only he could accomplish; which was, he built it from
a living tree, roots in the ground; Pen melts into tears and asks him forgive-
ness; Pen-splaining, the jealous gods gave them misery based on how happy
they would have been together, throughout their youth; but there are many men
who would have tried to deceive her, and thats why she has to test him; Pen-
splaining-further, that neither would Helen have gone with Paris, and become
the center of the Trojan war, had she not been so deceived; from which we may
conclude, that she tests him, as taking such precautions now, against
ever being the woman
at the center
of a war;
and then he appears, to her, as welcome as the land to men who are drowning,
and she couldnt let him go from her white-armed, like Heras, earths, embrace;
and Athena holds back time, so that they have enough of it, for tears, for hugs,
for conversation, and Od tells Pen about his sign; until the old-maid Eurynome
dresses their bed for them(probably we should check her out);

the unheard-of sailing
beautifully at least are you, and you,
and we, even me, as we bow to the Muse,
from silence, to work, to make music.
for far more by you and her tresses of blue
shall we speak freely and fluently flow
round her sea-song, along, on the leaf,
of what sort me and you happen to be
being, she sings and she whispers it slow,
an unheard-of sailing, through the distance.
but just now, were becalmed, were in irons.
which turn of the tide or twist of a rope,
which way of the wind, from Delos the boat,
by teeth of a goat on his own green grass,
how would we, under grey, manifesto for you
the impasse, the power, all her own.
cause shes full of it too. kompsos
like the chomp on her bridal-white jib
of a child, crocodile, laughing.
